Gators or Canes? A look back at the recruiting battles between the 2 schools.
As we put a close on the 2019 recruiting class & get ready for the Miami vs Florida match-up, let’s look at the most recent recruiting battles between the 2 schools.
This was a back & forth between the 2 schools up until signing day. For much of the fall it seemed as if Henderson was leaning towards UF. It appeared as if the tide had turned into Miami's favor once the season ended. After the dead period ended in January, every day that passed, his leader seemed to change. This ended on signing day with Henderson inking with the Gators.
Edwards seemed to a Miami lean for much of the cycle, but this battle heated up once the dead period ended in January. He took an official visit to Miami 2 weeks before signing day. It’s safe to say Miami's confidence was high. He then visited Florida the week before signing where the Gators seem to have grabbed the confidence to take the lead in this recruitment. When the dust had settled, the Gators received his signature on signing day.
Herbert seemed to be a Florida lean for much of the cycle, even naming the Gators his leader in the Spring before his senior year. But when former O-Line coach, Mike Summers, took the Louisville job 2 weeks before signing day, the Canes took the lead. It seemed a forgone conclusion that he would sign with Miami, which he did.
Lakeland Duo (Lloyd Summerall & Keon Zipperer)
Most times when 2 teammates claim to be a package deal early in the process, by decision time that will change. Well, this was not one of those situation. Miami felt confident over the summer with Zipperer, while Summerall always seemed to prefer the Gators. Most will remember the picture from the state championship game where both staffs were hovered around Zipperer's family. Once that game had ended, both staffs put the pressure on these 2 recruits, but they ultimately decided on the Gators.
Bogle seemed to be a Miami lean for much of his senior year. But after a stellar senior year, it seemed as if Alabama was the most confident to land him. Bogle was then slated to announce his decision at the Army All American game where he told the camera crew that he would sign with Tennessee, only to change his mind to Alabama right before the decision went live. Once he committed, most knew this recruitment was not over. He then took an official to Florida than a 2nd official to Miami. Ultimately, Bogle went on to flip to the Gators on signing day.
Early on, it seems as if the #RelationshipRibs have definitely paid off. It’ll be interesting to see if that trend continues. UF and Miami square off on August 31st for some serious bragging rights. Mullen has already kicked their ass on the trail and I would say it's a safe bet that he does it on the field too.
